Physical Activity Participation of Disabled Children: A Systematic Review of Conceptual and Methodological Approaches in Health Research

Abstract
La
participation à l'activité physique (AP) est largement reconnue comme
une composante essentielle de la santé et du développement pour les
enfants handicapés et non handicapés. La littérature émergente reflète
un changement de paradigme dans la conceptualisation de l'AP de
l'enfance en tant que construction multi-dimensionnelle, englobant les
aspects de la performance physique, et l'engagement autoévalué.
Cependant, l'ambiguïté demeure autour de la façon dont la participation
en tant que construction de santé est intégré dans la recherche en AP.
L'objectif principal de la présente mini-revue est d'examiner de façon
critique les approches conceptuelles et méthodologiques actuelles pour

effectué une revue systématique de la littérature contemporaine (publiée
entre 2000 et 2016). Dix-sept articles ont rencontré les critères
d'inclusion, et leur approche de la recherche a été classée dans le
cadre de guidage, la définition de la construction clé, et mesures
utilisées. Le cadre directeur principal était la classification
internationale du fonctionnement, du handicap et de la santé. Une
définition explicite de participation à l'AP était absente de toutes les
études. Huit études (47%) opérationnalisées l'AP et la participation en
tant que constructions indépendantes. Les mesures comprenaient des

et intensité), et des mesures de participation alternatives (perception

The primary guiding framework was the international classification of functioning, disability and health. An explicit definition of PA participation was absent from all studies. Eight studies (47%) operationalized PA and participation as independent constructs. Measurements included traditional performance-based aspects of PA (frequency, duration, and intensity), and alternative participation measures (subjective perception of involvement, inclusion, or enjoyment). Approximately 64% of included articles were published in the past 2 years (2014-2016) indicating a rising interest in the topic of PA participation. Drawing from the broader discussion of participation in the literature, we offer a working definition of PA participation as it pertains to active, health-associated behaviors. Further description of alternative approaches to framing and measuring PA participation are offered to support effective assessment of health status among disabled children.
